This chawan was thrown on the wheel in Bizen during my stay in the region, then fired for 7 days in Taiga Mori's noborigama kiln.
During firing, the chawan was held by a shell used as a firing support placed inside the piece, in the very spot where matcha is usually placed. The trace of the shell is still visible inside the chawan, like an imprint left by the firing.
Its position in the kiln allowed the ashes to settle on the foot, then spread over a large part of the outer wall. They created a drip in golden, brown, and darker shades, which dresses the piece and directly testifies to its passage through the kiln.
Entirely linked to the conditions of this firing, this transformation makes the piece impossible to reproduce exactly. It is one of my favorite chawans from this firing, for the way the fire and the ashes have shaped its appearance.

Expertise
Atelier Tadaima
Tadaima is a project dedicated to Japanese handcrafted ceramics and everyday objects.
Born from several trips to Japan, the project stems from a curiosity for ceramics, and more specifically for the chawan, whose presence in daily Japanese life gradually led me towards tea, matcha, and the world surrounding them.
