Its history
The tradition of Takayama chasen dates back several centuries and is intimately linked to the history of Japanese tea.
According to tradition, it was in Takayama that one of the first chasen, intended for the preparation of matcha, was created at the request of tea master Murata Jukō. Over time, chasen production developed in the region and was passed down within several families.
After the disappearance of the Takayama clan, sixteen families received the transmission of this know-how and continued to manufacture chasen in the region. Hochikuen is one of these families and has been perpetuating this tradition for over five centuries.
The house is now run by the 23rd generation, who continues this work while seeking to keep the chasen tradition alive in the contemporary world.
