This 80-prong chasen is handmade by Hochikuen, a historic Takayama brand from Nara Prefecture. Its many prongs allow for fine and consistent matcha preparation, especially when making usucha.

More densely packed than a chasen with fewer prongs, it allows for easy creation of a fine and even foam. It is thus a versatile model, particularly suitable for daily matcha preparation.

Each chasen is handcrafted in Takayama, using expertise passed down for over 500 years.

  • House: Hochikuen - 芳竹園
  • Origin: Takayama, Nara - Japan
  • Manufacturing: Handmade
  • Type: 八十本立 — 80 tines
  • Use: Matcha preparation

After use, rinse the chasen with warm water to remove matcha residue.

Allow it to air dry naturally, ideally on a chasen holder. Do not use soap or a dishwasher.

Avoid storing it in its packaging while it is still damp.

Maison Hochikuen

The history of Hochikuen House dates back over 500 years. It is one of sixteen families to whom the tradition of making Takayama chasen was passed down after the disappearance of the Takayama clan. Today, this know-how is perpetuated by the 23rd generation of the family.
